Description: The Winter 2019 GOLDENSEAL cover story is about “West Virginia’s Troubadour,” musician Mike Morningstar of Gilmer County. In a career that’s spanned more than 50 years, Mike’s original music has been grounded in his love of West Virginia. Through music, he tells emotional stories of life and loss, such as “West Virginia Girl,” “Mountaineers Are Always Free, and “Buffalo Creek.” Other articles in this issue include stories about Lucinda Rose, the only West Virginia woman to sacrifice her life for our country during World War I; the annual Lewisburg Shanghai Parade tradition on New Year’s Day; Summers County potter Jeff Diehl; a school consolidation crisis in Ritchie County in the early 1960s; Crane’s Custom fishing baits; the historical collection of Philippi’s Dr. Elmer Myers; a battle to stop strip mining in 1971; and Keyser’s Clifton E. Brooks Sr., our state’s last-surviving Tuskegee Airman. This edition also features our annual Mountain Music Roundup, a poem by Laurel Muhly-Alexander, a new legends & lore roadside marker program, and GOLDENSEAL Good-Byes to some great West Virginians we lost over the last year.
