Description:In our spring 2023 issue the feature article comes from Ivan Tribe, and Jacob Bapst and tells
the life story of Big Slim, the Lone Cowboy, a WWVA country music star. The issue also
features a look back at Marshall Track by Rod O’Donnell. David Ball reminisces on the many
uses for vintage feed sacks, and the fond memories associated with them. Readers will find a
lovely poem by author Laura Treacy Bentley called Notions remembering Anderson-
Newcomb’s store in Huntington - now the College of Art at Marshall University. Raymon
dAlvarez shares with us the story of Margaret Elizabeth Dickey—Fairmont Normal’s First
Female Principal. Ellen Lambert reflects on life lessons learned through entertaining stories of a
neighbor’s Rooster. Long-time GOLDENSEAL contributor Carl E. Feather has shared a
fascinating story of Volkmar Wentzel, a photographer for National Geographic who settled in
WV. Our editor takes a look back at the 2022 Vandalia Gathering! The unique story of the South
Charleston Weberwood community is shared by author Richard Hartman. John Hopper shares
the inspiring story of Dr. Alice Randall, MD. Brady Eanes shares the story of his Family’s shoe
Repair shop, an important part of their McDowell County community. Nancy S. Hoffman shares
her experience at the Camp Horseshoe Quilt Retreat that takes place each year in Tucker
County. There are three articles in this issue that are the product of a contest conducted by
Charleston Catholic’s 8th Grade West Virginia History Class taught by Ms. Jennifer Cline.
Student Hanna Vriendt wrote a great historical overview of Charleston’s Luna Park and Historic
District, student Mateo Lao wrote an article on his Family’s former business in Madison, The
Cup, and student Carlee Stone wrote an article about her Aunt’s life growing up on their family
farm in Putnam County. Nancy Edwards Buell contributed an article about her Uncle’s time as a
rural mail carrier in Ona. T.G. Griffeth shares a great article about the life of Stone Cutter Ashby
Martin, from Nicholas County. Finally, this issue’s Back Roads is a feature on Larry Mustain and
his efforts to keep his family’s historic Reed’s Mill up and running, with a sidebar on the Everett
Hogsett broom Factory house within the mill’s back room.
